Li Guohao (1913-2005) was a native of Meixian County, Guangdong Province. He was a scientist in bridge construction and civil engineer. He graduated from Civil Engineering Department of Shanghai Tongji University in 1936, and obtained a doctorate degree in engineering of Germany Darmstadt University in 1942. Li had served as professor and honorary president of Shanghai Tongji University. He was elected Member of Chinese Academy of Science in 1955 and became academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. He served as a member of the State Council Degree Awarding Committee for two terms. He was an honorary member of Chinese Association of Science and Technology, an honorary chairman of Chinese Federation of Engineering Society and an honorary Chairman of Chinese Association of Senior Scientists and Engineers. He was invited to act as a member and later director of Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge Technology Committee and Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge Technology Committee. He was appointed the leading consultant of Engineering Technology Committee of Baoshan Steel Plant.
His doctorate degree thesis, titled "Practical Analysis Method of Suspended Rope Bridge according to Second Order Theory", became widely known in Germany. He was named "Suspended Rope Bridge Master Li". He solved the vibration problem of Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge. Li directed the research on engineering earthquake resistance and explosion resistance. His research achievement titled "Analysis about Horizontal Displacement, Internal Stress and Bearing Capacity of Piles" helped Baoshan Iron and Steel Works solve key problems. Li Guohao participated in several famous bridge designs and constructions such as Chengdu-Kunming Railway Bridge and Nanjing-Yangtze Bridge. In 1973, he wrote a book titled the Torsion Theory of Spar--Truss Bridge Torsion, Stability and Vibration. This book of several hundred thousand words provided a reliable basis for truss bridge design and construction. His other works include "Braced Girder Retortion Theory: Retortion, Stability and Vibration of Braced Girder Bridge" and "Transverse Distribution Calculation of Highway Bridge Load". He also compiled "Engineering Structure Earthquake Resistance Dynamics", "Engineering Structure Explosion Resistance Dynamics" and "Stability and Vibration of Bridge Structure" as editor-in-chief. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Li was rated as one of top 10 world famous bridge experts by the International Bridge and Structural Engineering Association in 1981. In 1987, he was conferred with International Award of Structural Engineering. In 1995, he was awarded Ho Leung Ho Lee Award for Science and Technology Advancement.
