Liang Shuquan (1912.09-2006.12) is a native of Zhongshan, Guangdong Province. Liang was an analytical chemist and educator. He graduated from Department of Chemistry, College of Science, Yanching University in 1933. He received his doctorate of Natural Philosophy from Munchen University in Germany in 1937. Subsequently he became a research fellow at the Chemistry Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Liang was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1955.
Liang has been involved in inorganic chemistry research for several years. The numerical value of Fe he obtained by chemical means in 1937 and published in his doctorate thesis "Amendment of Iron Atomic Weight" in 1939 was adopted by the International Atomic Weight Committee the following year, and still holds today. Liang had engaged in studies of analytical methods of vitriol base, florin ion, tungsten, molybdenum, lanthanum, analysis of Yin-Shang dynasty bronze and the research of minim and trace. His research in analytical methods on Baotou Baiyun rare earth and rare elements has been recognized as highly notable and provided valuable data for Baotou Steel Factory. A pioneer in chemical analysis on China's environment, Liang also made the earliest study on environmental pollution caused by sintering and smelting iron ore containing fluorine. He researched on and established a number of methods for segregation and enrichment, such as foaming, resin loading, molten and extraction, and separating out the micro-spot, especially for rare earth and noble metal in China. He studied for the first time on loaded reticular resin's structural parameters' influence on performance of segregation. He was the first one to develop an innovative reagent—macromolecule color developing reagent, which provided a new approach for development of organic reagent. Liang devoted his life to scientific research and education made significant contributions to expansion and development of China's analytical chemistry. He wrote, translated and edited over 10 books, such as Analytical Method on Iron Mine; Volumetric Analysis; Inorganic Trace Analysis; Complexometric Titration and Its Application; Separation Method in Analytical Chemistry. Liang published over 130 pieces of academic thesis in foreign and domestic publications.
