Peng Chen-Zhi, Male, born October, 1976 in Hunan. He got his bachelor degree in Applied Physics from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1998 and the Ph.D. degree from USTC in 2005. After two years of postdoctoral fellow, he worked as an Assistant Professor in T
singhua University since 2007. From 2009, he became a professor in national laboratory for physical sciences at the microscale, USTC. Since published his first paper in quantum communication, he has fetched a series of significant achievements in entanglement based quantum communication and practical decoy state quantum key distribution. So far, he has published 7 papers in top-level journals, such as sub-Journal of Nature, PNAS and Physical Review Letter. In three of them, he was the first or corresponding author. All these works were achieved in China.
As the first author, he realized experimental free-space distribution of entangled photon pairs over 13 km for the first time. The reviewers of the journal 'Physical Review Letter' commented that it was of great significance and was a quite remarkable achievement. New Scientist reported that a Chinese team, which has just broken the record for transmitting entangled particles broken the record for transmitting entangled particles, will test the feasibility of satellite-based quantum communication using the wall. The experiment demonstrated for the first time that entanglement can still survive after penetrating the effective thickness of the aerosphere by showing a violation of the Bell inequality with space-like separated observers. The observed strong violation of the Bell inequality is sufficient to guarantee the absolute security of the quantum cryptography scheme. Moreover, the technology developed in the experiment presented a significant step towards satellite-based global quantum communication.
As the corresponding author, he reported free-space implementation of quantum teleportation over 16 km. The result was published as a cover article in 'Nature Photonics', a sub-Journal of Nature. This work caused a great concern of the international academic community and the public. Physics today, the news sites of the American Physical Society, wrote a special report titled' Quantum teleportation through open air' . Times reported this work as a topic 'China' s Great (Quantum) Leap Forward'. Recently this work was enlisted as 2010 China's top ten news of scientific and technological progress, 2010 China's top ten science advances, 2010 China's top ten scientific and technological news, and the 11th five exhibition of the national major science and technology achievements, achieving good academic and social impact.
As first or corresponding author, he made a series of important research results in practical decoy state quantum key distribution. Quantum phone calls, which were achieved with his colleagues, had been used for the first time by the security of the Central Guard Bureau in the 60th anniversary parade, and got a high evaluation of the party and state leaders.
As one of the main authors, he was invited by the journal Physics Reports to write a review paper of quantum communication experiments. It was one of the few review papers published by Chinese in Physics Reports, and the only one review paper in the experimental field of quantum communication.
As the chief scientist's assistant and the division of scientific applications, he is now is leading and participating in the project named Quantum Science Satellite, which is organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Experimental research on quantum communication
The recipient has fetched a series of significant achievements in entanglement based quantum communication and practical decoy state quantum key distribution. Experimentally, he for the first time in the world realized experimental free-space distribution of entangled photon pairs over 13 km for the first time, free-space implementation of quantum teleportation over 16 km, and expended the absolutely safety distance of quantum communication from 10km to 100km with the help of decoy state quantum key distribution. Through these studies, on the one hand, by investigating long-distance quantum communication in fiber, quantum communication has been pushed from laboratory to practical applications and immensely quickened its practical process. On the other hand, by investigating long-distance quantum entanglement distribution and quantum teleportation via free-space channels, the feasibility of experimental testing the laws of quantum mechanics over thousand kilometers has been experimentally demonstrated. This research has presented a significant step towards satellite-based global quantum communication.
