The TKK Science Award Foundation Lead CAS members to Qinghai to Support Local Development

Date:Sep 12, 2024

To implement the important directives of President Xi Jinping during his visit to Qinghai in 2024 and to contribute to regional development, promote green growth, and build an ecological civilization, Tan Kah Kee Science Award Foundation (referred to as "the Foundation") organized members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to visit Qinghai from September 3 to September 5, 2024.

With the goal of promoting the spirit of scientists and combine efforts for high-quality development, the event was hosted by the Foundation and co-organized by the Qinghai Association for Science and Technology and the Qinghai Education Department.

The delegation to Qinghai was led by Prof. Dr. MEI Hong, Tan Kah Kee Science Award (TKK Science Award) laureate and CAS member. Joining him were CAS members CUI Peng, LI Yongfang, and ZHU Meifang, as well as TKK Young Scientist Award laureates SUN Yele, ZHU Jun, and professor LIU Jiahong. XUE Huai, Deputy Director of the Bureau of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASAD), and other supporting staff were also part of the delegation.

The delegation engaged in activities in primary, secondary, and higher education institutions across Qinghai Province. They organized science popularization sessions titled "The Science and China: TKK Lecture Series", participated in charitable education initiatives, and conducted field research at local universities and enterprises. They aimed to support local economic and social development while contributing to the establishment of world-class universities in the region.

On September 3, 2024, the launching ceremony of the "TKK Lecture Series" was held. XUE delivered a speech on behalf of the Foundation and donated books, including The Thoughts of Scientists and Academician Biographies, to six universities in Qinghai Province.

On September 3 and September 5, 2024, the Foundation organized two charitable education events. During these events, teaching materials and essential living resources were donated to local schools. The initiatives aimed to provide students and teachers with additional learning resources and development opportunities, inspire students' passion for learning, and enhance their overall competencies.

From September 3 to 4, the delegation visited high-tech enterprises in Xining, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and Haidong City, as well as Qinghai University. During this time, they held discussions with local government departments in Xining on several topics, including green computing, the development of salt lake and new material industries, and natural disaster risk management. Additionally, they conducted meetings with Qinghai University regarding the development of double first-class universities and large-scale research facilities for salt lake chemistry.

The TKK Science Award Foundation was jointly established by CAS and the Bank of China. Through its flagship events under the "Science and China" brand, the Foundation has launched the "TKK Lecture Series," utilizing the science popularization resources of CAS. The Foundation organizes visits by TKK Science Award laureates, TKK Young Scientist Award winners, and CAS members to enterprises, government departments, research institutes, universities, and schools. These activities aim to promote the scientific spirit, disseminate scientific knowledge, and advocate for scientific methodologies. Ultimately, the Foundation seeks to bridge the gap between science and the public, enhance public understanding of science, and improve overall scientific literacy in society.
